Intro to the Beats Movement
The Beats Movement was predominant from the mid 1950's through the 1960's. The Beat Movement is though to have started at Columbia University where many of the predominant writers of the time first met. San Francisco was also a hotbed of the Beat Movement. The iconic name was derived from the socially "beaten down" feeling shared by the leaders of the movement. There is also a musical influence in the name and overall movement because the members identified with the free flowing and open jazz music scene. There is a definite emphasis on personal freedom and breaking down the conformist, materialistic, and militaristic ideals. Many pieced of literature are deeply connected with Buddhism and radical political ideals.
